USC (18-0 overall, 3-0 MPSF) freshman goalkeeper Joel Dennerly had 10 saves at No. 10 Long Beach State Saturday as the top-ranked Trojans stayed unbeaten on the year with a 12-7 win. Junior Shea Buckner led the scoring with three goals. Another key MPSF road game is coming up this week with a visit to Pepperdine Sunday.
PEPPERDINE (14-4 overall, 2-0 MPSF) won a 9-4 MPSF game at No. 16 Pacific Saturday and a 14-9 decision at No. 11 UC Davis Friday. Junior JP MacDonnell scored three goals in Stockton, while senior Adam Hewko's five goals was the difference in Davis. No. 1 USC visits Pepperdine Sunday (Oct. 26) in a crucial conference battle.
STANFORD (15-2 overall, 1-0 MPSF) had 10 different players score, led by Janson Wigo's eighth hat trick of the year, in a 12-2 rout at No. 4 UCLA Saturday in an MPSF meeting. Goalkeeper Jimmy Sandman picked up 11 saves in three and a half periods in the cage, as just one shot eluded him. The Cardinal also defeated UC Santa Cruz, 14-2, Sunday. Pacific (Wed.) and Long Beach State (Sat.) visit this week in conference action.
CALIFORNIA (11-4 overall, 0-1 MPSF) blew past No. 11 UC Davis Saturday, 11-2, in non-league play in Davis. Junior Mike Sample led the Bears with three goals. UCLA visits on Saturday (Oct. 25) at 10 am in MPSF competition, prior to kick-off in the UCLA-Cal football game. Each team has one non-conference win over the other this year. Cal also hosts Santa Clara Sunday (Oct. 26).
UC SANTA BARBARA (11-7 overall, 1-1 MPSF) sophomore and MPSF scoring leader Milos Golic tallied four goals, while junior Michael Robinson tied his career-high 14 saves in goal as the Gauchos edged No. 9 UC Irvine 13-12 in sudden-victory overtime at home Saturday. Senior Daniel Natalizio scored the game-winner in the third OT period. The non-conference outcome marked the third straight win for UCSB over UCI this year. A total of five goals have decided the four meetings this year between the two teams. UCSB hosts UC San Diego Friday.
UC IRVINE (7-8 overall, 0-2 MPSF) sophomore Brandon Johnson's four goals was the difference in a 13-9 win over No. 18 Brown Sunday. The Anteaters raced out to a 6-1 first quarter lead. Johnson also had four tallies as UCI knocked off No. 20 Cal Baptist this past week, 11-9. The Anteaters have won five of their last six and host Long Beach State Wednesday (Oct. 22) in non-conference play.
UCLA (9-4 overall, 1-1 MPSF) fell 12-2 at home to No. 2 Stanford Saturday in MPSF action, though bounced back vs. No. 18 Brown Sunday, 14-2. Sophomore Jacob Murphy and senior Krsto Sbutega each netted three goals in the win. UCLA travels to Northern California this weekend for a pair of conference match-ups, taking on California Saturday (Oct. 25) and Pacific Sunday (Oct. 26).
PACIFIC (10-12 overall, 0-1 MPSF) fell 9-4 Saturday to No. 5 Pepperdine in the Tigers' MPSF opener in Stockton, but recovered in the nightcap, 10-9 over No. 20 Cal Baptist behind four goals from senior Shane Mahoney. Pacific has a busy week ahead, visiting Stanford (Wed.) and UC Davis (Fri.), before hosting UCLA (Sun).
LONG BEACH STATE (9-10 overall, 0-2 MPSF) dropped a 12-7 MPSF home game to top-ranked USC Saturday. Junior Derek Wiebe-Bailey recorded 10 saves in goal. The 49ers have four games this week, visiting UC Irvine (Wed.), Stanford (Sat.), UC Davis (Sun.), followed by Air Force (Sun.) in Davis.
SANDMAN NAMED MPSF MIKASA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Woodland, Calif. - Stanford junior goalkeeper Jimmy Sandman (Los Altos Hills, CA/Menlo School) stopped 11 shots and allowed just one goal in just under four full periods of net-binding at No. 4 UCLA Saturday. The Cardinal handily won this key MPSF game, 12-2. Sandman now owns a remarkable 4.00 goals-against average.
