Aggies, Spartans Deliver Record Openers

SAN JOSE STATE accumulated a third-place season-opening team record 194.475 in the NorCal Classic at Stanford (Jan. 8), ahead of UC Davis and Sacramento State and behind California and Stanford. Kaitlin Won led the Spartans with a 39.000 all-around and a 9.875 on bars. Kaprece Nadonza led the team on vault at 9.750, while Stephanie Relova recorded a team-best balance beam (9.775). Taylor Chan received a 9.875 on floor to lead the team.

UC DAVIS scored a fourth-place and team record total for a season-opener 194.400 in the NorCal Classic (Jan. 8), beating the 2015 Aggies' record opener (194.350). The UCD uneven bars team also set a new season-opening benchmark with 48.800. Alexis Brown scored at least 9.825 on three events en route to a third-place all-around (39.200), including a 9.85 on beam for a third-place tie.

SACRAMENTO STATE totaled 192.875 in the NorCal Classic (Jan. 8). Annie Jaurez highlighted the Hornets with a second-place tying vault (9.80), while also posting a sixth-place tying 9.85 on bars. Courtney Soliwoda and Jennifer Brenner each recorded a 9.80 on beam and floor, respectively.

AIR FORCE won its season opener at home over Wisconsin-La Crosse, 193.425-191.350 (Jan. 6). The team total marked the Academy's highest for an opener in the 12-year Doug Day tenure (by more than two points). Mariana Murphy won balance beam (9.775) and all-around (38.675). Tyler Davis recorded 9.750 to win the vault in her collegiate debut, en route to a second-place all-around (38.075). Jessica Kirkpatrick, also in her first collegiate meet, won the uneven bars (9.775).
