Recap by Cal Sports Information

STANFORD, Calif. -- A flurry of first period offense put the Cal men's water polo team in control right away and the Bears walked away from day two of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships with the win they needed as 10 different players scored in a 27-3 victory over Penn State Behrend.

With Saturday's win, Cal (19-3) moves on to Sunday's third-place match against the host Cardinal. Action is set to begin at 11 a.m. at Avery Aquatic Center and the match will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Networks. UCLA and USC will follow in the championship match at 1 p.m.

After dropping a hard-fought match against UCLA on Friday night, Cal returned to the pool Saturday looking to establish rhythm right away. The Bears achieved that goal immediately, scoring within the first few seconds to take the lead. Vassilis Tzavaras, Safak Simsek, Luca Cupido, Nicholas Carniglia, Nikos Delagrammatikas, Johnny Hooper and Conor Neumann all scored in the first period and Cal finished the first eight minutes with an 11-1 advantage.

Spencer Tagg drew the assignment in the cage and made 11 saves for the Bears. Simsek led the Bears with six goals, three steals, two assists and two field blocks while Carniglia, Hooper, Neumann and Jordan Hoover each contributed three goals. Cupido, Tzavaras, Delgrammatikas and Ryan Hurst all added two and Spencer Farrar rounded out the scoring with one. Cupido led the way in the assist category with four while senior Connor Reid also had a strong match with four assists and three steals.

Sunday's game between the Bears and Cardinal represents the rubber match for the season series. Cal earned the first win with an 11-9 victory at the Mountain Pacific Invitational in September. Stanford evened the series with a win in conference play, dealing the Bears an 11-10 defeat in the Big Splash.
