Cal Picks Up Key MPSF Road Win

CALIFORNIA (1-0 MPSF, 17-1 Overall) won the first of its three conference games and avenged its only loss of the year, 12-9 at No. 2 UCLA Saturday (Oct. 21). Up by one at half, the Bears scored back-to-back goals midway through the third quarter to take a 9-6 lead and were not caught. Odysseas Masmanidis poured in a hat trick, while Nikos Delagrammatikas, Luca Cupido, and Conor Neuman added two goals apiece. Kevin LeVine recorded 11 saves in the cage. Sunday (Oct. 22), Cal made it seven-straight wins with a 14-8 outcome at No. 8 Long Beach State. Masmanidis delivered another hat trick and drew three ejections. Cupido had a game-high four goals, making him the first player in the MPSF this year to reach 50 (2.78 GPG). He added two assists, three steals, and drew four ejections. Cal is off this week, in preparation for hosting USC in another MPSF contest Nov. 4. The Bears’ regular season finale is at rival Stanford to close their MPSF schedule on Nov. 9.

USC (1-0 MPSF, 19-1 Overall) defeated No. 6 UC Irvine at home Saturday (Oct. 21), 13-8. Marko Vavic had a game-high three goals along with an assist and steal, while Thomas Dunstan and Zach D’Sa each scored twice. McQuin Baron had six saves, giving him 968 in his career, and 89 from the all-time conference record of 1,057 (Alex Malkis, Pacific; 2010-13). On a six-game win streak, USC visits Concordia Friday (Oct. 27) and hosts San Jose State on Senior Day Saturday (Oct. 28).

STANFORD (0-1 MPSF, 13-3 Overall) racked up four non-conference wins this past week, 11-3 over No. 16 Bucknell, 20-5 over Wagner (Oct. 20), 9-3 over No. 7 Pepperdine (Oct. 21) and 20-4 vs. No. 12 St. Francis in Santa Clara (Oct. 22). Ben Hallock totaled 12 goals and Cody Smith had nine for the week. Drew Holland totaled 29 saves for the week, giving him 867 in his career, and 22 away from the all-time top-five in MPSF history. Stanford takes seven-straight wins heading south to Long Beach State Saturday (Oct. 28) and UC Irvine Sunday (Oct. 29).

PENN STATE BEHREND (0-0 MPSF, 6-11 Overall) following losses to Iona and La Salle, won back-to-back games to close the weekend, 10-6 over Washington & Jefferson and 17-10 at Connecticut College in New London, CT (Oct. 21-22). Matt Olimski collected 13 saves vs. Iona, 17 against both W & J and La Salle, and then broke the school and MPSF single-game record with 24 vs. CC. His 205 saves (14.51 SPG) leads the MPSF. Grant Garcia put away 10 goals through four games, including five vs. CC, giving him a team-high 33 on the year (1.94 GPG). The Lions host Gannon to close their regular season Saturday (Oct. 28).

UCLA (0-1 MPSF, 15-2 Overall) dropped its MPSF opener, 12-9 at home to California (Oct. 21). Matt Farmer matched a game-high three goals, while Nicolas Saveljic scored twice. UCLA hosts Pacific Saturday (Oct. 28). The Bruins won the first meeting between the two teams, 9-8 on Sept. 23 at USC. Two more MPSF contests remain on the schedule; at Stanford (Nov. 4), and USC at home (Nov. 11), along with a non-conference game at San Jose State in between (Nov. 5).
