MPSF Defense Fuel Wins Over GCC

STANFORD (0-1 MPSF, 8-3 Overall) Drew Holland collected 16 saves, while Ben Hallock, Cody Smith, and Connor Stapleton each scored a hat trick as the Cardinal recorded an impressive 12-7 win at No. 5 Pacific (Oct. 7), the highest-ranked team in the Gold Coast Conference. Stanford broke open a 6-6 tie late in the third quarter with five unanswered goals, leading to an 11-6 lead with under two minutes to play in the fourth. Hallock also dished three assists, including one on a third quarter go-ahead-for-good goal. Holland’s outing gives him 821 career saves, moving into ninth-place all-time in the MPSF (four saves away from eighth and 25 from seventh). Stanford hosts UC Santa Barbara Saturday (Oct. 14) at 4 pm on Pac-12 Networks.

USC (1-0 MPSF, 18-1 Overall) McQuin Baron recorded an MPSF season-high 18 saves in an 11-9 overtime win over the GCC’s No. 7 Long Beach State last Thursday (Oct. 5). He added 14 saves in another win over the GCC, 6-3 at No. 8 UC Santa Barbara Sunday (Oct. 8), giving him 32 saves for the week and stopping 73 percent of the shots on goal he faced. In the process, he jumped into second-place in MPSF history with 962 career saves, leaving him 95 away from the all-time conference record of 1,057 (Alex Malkis, Pacific; 2010-13). Blake Edwards had two goals and two assists at UCSB, and is now tied for the most goals in the MPSF this year with 33. USC is off until Oct. 21 when UC Irvine visits.

UCLA (0-0 MPSF, 13-1 Overall) never trailed nor was it caught at No. 9 Pepperdine last Saturday (Oct. 7) in Malibu, holding off the Waves, 8-7. Chasen Travisano led the Bruins with a hat trick, while Alex Wolf collected 12 saves. Four of the seven goals he allowed were on the power play. Max Irving added two goals, one assist, and one steal. UCLA hosts Cal Baptist Friday (Oct. 13) and Long Beach State Saturday (Oct. 14).

CALIFORNIA (0-0 MPSF, 13-1 Overall) scored nine goals in the second quarter to pull away from Santa Clara at home last Wednesday (Oct. 4), 21-9. MPSF goals-per-game leader (2.70) Johnny Hooper accumulated three goals, four assists, two steals and a field block. Luca Cupido, Spencer Farrar, and Connor Reid also finished with a hat trick, while Safak Simsek added two goals. Cupido shares the MPSF lead with 33 goals on the year. Cal hosts UC Irvine Saturday (Oct. 14) and San Jose State Sunday (Oct. 15).

PENN STATE BEHREND (0-0 MPSF, 3-7 Overall) won its final game in Claremont’s Gary Troyer Tournament over Occidental, 8-7, after losses to Cal Lutheran, Cal Tech, and Fresno Pacific. Grant Garcia and Greg Kinzler scored two goals apiece in the win, the former totaling eight over the four games. Matt Olimski totaled 40 saves over the four games, 18 in the win to share the 2017 MPSF-high. PSB competes this weekend in the CWPA DIII Championship at MIT. The Lions face Monmouth and MIT Saturday.
