USC Wins MPSF Opener; PSB Snaps Long Drought

USC (1-0 MPSF, 5-0 Overall) McQuin Baron collected 12 saves, while Marko Vavic, Blake Edwards, and Matteo Morelli each poured in two goals as the Trojans picked up an MPSF win over No. 3 Stanford in last Friday’s conference opener in Los Angeles (Sept. 8). USC scored the first two goals of the contest and was not caught. The Trojans came back Sunday (Sept. 10) to win a doubleheader at the Inland Empire Classic, 20-1 over Claremont-Mudd Scripps, and 16-5 over the host Redlands, as Zach D’Sa recorded a hat trick in each game. Baron added seven saves in Redlands, giving him a career total of 844 saves, 11 away from school record holder Joel Dennerley’s 855 and a top-five all-time MPSF statistic. Unbeaten USC heads to the UC Davis Roundup this weekend to play Cal Baptist, MIT, Long Beach State, and Santa Clara (Sept. 16-17).

PENN STATE BEHREND (0-0 MPSF, 1-1 Overall) won its first game since the 2014 season, a span of 48 games and 1,038 days, as it took down Washington & Jefferson 9-7 in Erie, PA (Sept. 9). Grant Garcia matched the 2017 MPSF single-game high of five goals, while Bryce Barnes collected 12 saves in his collegiate debut. Matt Olimsky collected 16 saves in the 10-5 loss to Mercyhurst (Sept. 10). Following a bye week, the Lions are in action Sept. 23-24 in Washington, PA, facing Monmouth and McKendree.

CALIFORNIA (0-0 MPSF, 6-0 Overall) won its first two home games over No. 9 UC Davis last Wednesday (Sept. 6), 15-10, and No. 5 Pacific Saturday (Sept. 9), 15-11. Johnny Hooper put away four goals against the Aggies, followed by Luca Cupido with a hat trick. Cupido tallied a team-high four goals against Pacific, giving him an MPSF second-most 14 on the year. Unbeaten Cal hosts Pepperdine Friday (Sept. 15) and UC San Diego Saturday (Sept. 16).

UCLA (0-0 MPSF, 7-0 Overall) won all five games at the Princeton Invitational last weekend to stay unbeaten, defeating No. 17 George Washington 20-4, No. 18 St. Francis Brooklyn 12-3, followed by No. 16 Bucknell 18-8, No. 14 Brown 18-2, and previously unbeaten host No. 11 Princeton, 14-8. Max Irving accumulated 13 goals over the five wins. Chasen Travisano and Nicolas Saveljic posted four goals apiece in the win over the Tigers. Saveljic enters the week with an MPSF-high 16 goals on the year (2.29 GPG). UCLA hosts UC Santa Barbara Friday (Sept. 15).

STANFORD (0-1 MPSF, 4-1 Overall) dropped its lone game last week, an MPSF game at USC, 8-6. Ben Hallock shared a game-high two goals, giving him 13 in his first five collegiate outings (2.60 GPG). He and Blake Parrish share the MPSF lead in scoring average (2.60 GPG). Drew Holland became the all-time saves leader in Cardinal history, collecting 10 to push his career total to 753, and passing Chris Aguilera’s record of 744 (1994-98). Holland currently ranks 12th in MPSF history in total saves, 31 away from the top-10. Stanford is next in action when it returns to Los Angeles for the MPSF Invitational, Sept. 22-24.
