MPSF Unbeaten on Opening Weekend

MPSF Men's Water Polo Release # 1

CALIFORNIA (0-0 MPSF, 4-0 Overall) opened the 2017 season with a 4-0 weekend at the UC San Diego Invitational (Sept. 2-3). The defending national champion and top-ranked Bears took down four ranked teams- No. 17 Loyola Marymount 16-1, the host No. 12 Tritons 12-7, No. 8 Long Beach State 14-7, and No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, 8-7. Luca Cupido, Odysseas Masmanidis, and Pedro Stellet each totaled seven goals through the four wins. Stellet recorded a hat trick in the one-goal game vs. UCSB. Cameron Wright put away four goals in his collegiate debut against LMU. Kevin Le Vine and Spencer Tagg each logged two games in the cage, collecting 27 and 22 saves, respectively. Cal hosts UC Davis Wednesday (Sept. 6) at 5 pm on Pac-12 Networks, followed by a home game against Pacific Saturday (Sept. 9).

STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 4-0 Overall) Blake Parrish tallied 13 goals while Ben Hallock debuted with 11, as the Cardinal outscored their opponents by a combined 85-11 in a four-game sweep of the Bruno Classic, hosted by Harvard and Brown. Stanford blasted MIT 24-1 and No. 10 Harvard 21-5 (Sept. 2), along with No. 19 St. Francis Brooklyn 21-5 and No. 15 Brown, 19-0 (Sept. 3). Parrish delivered an MPSF single game-high five goals against St. Francis, while Hallock, Sam Pfeil, and Bennett Williams each posted four-goal games. Stanford travels to USC Friday (Sept. 8) at 5 pm on Pac-12 Networks in the first MPSF game of the year.

USC (0-0 MPSF, 2-0 Overall) won a doubleheader at the UCLA Invitational (Sept. 2) to get the season started, 27-3 over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and 24-3 over No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer. Grant Stein totaled six goals in the two games, including four against CMS. Sam Slobodien also shared a team-high four vs. the Stags, while Blake and Lachlan Edwards added three apiece. Thomas Dunstan and James Walters scored hat tricks against the Sagehens. The Trojans open MPSF play at home Friday (Sept. 8) against Stanford, before meeting Claremont again along with Redlands on Sunday (Sept. 10) in Redlands.

UCLA (0-0 MPSF, 2-0 Overall) won a doubleheader in its own invitational to begin the season this past Saturday (Sept. 2), 16-5 over No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer and 19-2 over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Nicolas Saveljic scored a hat trick on his first collegiate day vs. CMS, as did fellow freshman Quentin Osborne vs. Pomona. UCLA plays five games at the Princeton Invitational this weekend, starting Friday (Sept. 8) against George Washington. The Bruins also face St. Francis Brooklyn that day, followed by Bucknell and Brown Saturday (Sept. 9), and the host Princeton on ESPNU Sunday (Sept. 10).

PENN STATE BEHREND (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) enters its second season as members of the MPSF, though as in its first year, will compete solely in the conference tournament (Nov. 17-19 at Stanford). The Lions open this weekend in Erie, PA, taking on Washington & Jefferson Saturday (Sept. 9) and the host Mercyhurst Sunday (Sept. 10).
