USC (3-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) outscored its opponents 64-10 over three wins at the season-opening UCLA Invitational this past weekend. The top-ranked and four-time defending NCAA Champion defeated La Verne (23-3), Pomona-Pitzer (20-3), and Chapman (21-4). Nikola Vavic combined for 10 goals on 12 total shots over the three wins. USC hosts Cal Baptist Saturday (Sept. 8) in its home opener.
UCLA (3-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) true freshman Danny McClintick scored a team-high seven goals on 13 shots in the Bruins' three wins at their own invitational (Sept 1-2). His efforts included a team season-high four goals in the 15-5 victory over Chapman. UCLA also picked up wins over Pomona-Pitzer (16-5) and Cal Baptist (15-7), and now prepare for the Princeton Invitational against Fordham, George Washington, Johns Hopkins, and the host Tigers.
UC SANTA BARBARA (2-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) Matt Gronow led a pair of wins during the opening weekend at the UCLA Invitational. The Aussie scored a hat trick against both Cal Baptist and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, as the Gauchos defeated the Lancers, 13-6, and Claremont-Mudd, 19-2. UCSB hosts UC San Diego Saturday (Sept. 8), and will partake in the Inland Empire Tournament Sunday (Sept. 9).
PEPPERDINE (2-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) seniors Colin Carroll and Stephen Loomis led the team with five goals apiece as the Waves took out Claremont (13-5) and La Verne (20-7) in the UCLA Invitational to begin 2012. Loomis put away four vs. the Leopards. Goalkeeper Bence Valics totaled 25 saves over the two wins. Pepperdine's home opener is Saturday (Sept. 8) against Loyola Marymount.
UC IRVINE (2-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) hosted the UCI Invitational to start 2012, as junior All-American Mitch Wise had five goals in the season-opening 16-8 victory over Chapman. He followed with five more goals in an 18-7 win over Redlands, for a 10-goal weekend. The Anteaters compete in the Inland Empire Tournament this weekend, meeting Occidental and Claremont Saturday (Sept. 8).
LONG BEACH STATE (2-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) came away with a pair of season-opening wins at the UC Irvine Invitational, taking down Redlands (17-5) and Chapman (16-8). Goalkeeper Balint Meszaros collected 21 saves in his first two games as a 49er, including 13 against Chapman. Spencer White recorded five goals vs. the Bulldogs. LBSU faces La Verne, Occidental, and Air Force in the Inland Empire Tournament this weekend.
CALIFORNIA (0-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) begins its season at the Princeton Invitational, Sept. 7-9. The Bears will take on St. Francis and Princeton Friday, Harvard and Bucknell Saturday, and MIT Sunday. Cal returns three 2011 All-Americans for the 2012 campaign - senior goalie Justin Parsons (second team), junior attacker Collin Smith (honorable mention) and sophomore attacker Aleksa Saponjic (honorable mention).
PACIFIC (0-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) begins its season at the NorCal Tournament, Sept. 15-16 at Stanford. Key Returnees include senior Goran Tomasevic, junior Balazs Erdelyi, and junior goalkeeper Alex Malkis. Erdelyi ranked fourth in the conference a year ago with 2.24 goals per game, while Tomasevic was ninth (1.77 GPG). Malkis collected an MPSF-high 230 saves, 10.22 per contest.
STANFORD (0-0 Overall, 0-0 MPSF) begins its season when hosting the NorCal Tournament, Sept. 15-16. The Cardinal won 19 games last year and reached the semifinal round of the MPSF Tournament. Stanford's top Returners include Alex Bowen (team-leading 53 goals in 2011, ACWPC All-America First Team, MPSF Newcomer of the Year), and Forrest Watkins (42 goals in 2011, ACWPC All-America Second Team, All-MPSF First Team).
MITCH WISE MPSF KAP7 PLAYER OF THE WEEK
UC Irvine junior driver Mitch Wise (Beaverton, OR/Southridge HS) scored five goals each in back-to-back wins to open the season for the sixth-ranked Anteaters in the UCI Invitational Saturday. Wise had five goals in the 16-8 victory over Chapman to open the tournament and followed with five more in an 18-7 win over Redlands.
