2018 MPSF Player of the Year

Pepperdine redshirt junior outside hitter David Wieczorek (Chicago, Ill/Loyola Academy) played a major role in the Waves’ 15 regular season wins and top-five national ranking. Wieczorek is one of just two outside hitters listed in the MPSF’s top-15 in both hitting percentage and kill average, hitting .358 while averaging an MPSF second-best 3.94 kills per set. He is also the only outside hitter ranked in the MPSF’s top-10 in hitting percentage. Wieczorek is on top of the conference and No. 3 nationally in aces per set (0.59), with a high of 26 aces within the 12 conference matches. He leads the MPSF and is third in the nation in points per set (4.96), and is one of two outsides to be ranked amongst the top-15 in blocking. Wieczorek earned an MPSF-high four weekly awards this year, each as an offensive player of the week. Leading to his fourth honor, he tied the 2018 MPSF-high of six aces vs. Concordia (Mar. 15), recorded a team season-high 22 kills in a win over No. 3 Hawaii (Mar. 18), and hit .400 for the week. In a four-set win at No. 4 UC Irvine (Feb. 14), he put up 19 kills with a .350 clip, while serving three aces and recording a pair of block solos. This is the all-time record seventh MPSF Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year award for Pepperdine, and the first in nine years (Paul Carroll-2009; Jon Winder-2007; Sean Rooney-2005; Brad Keenan-2002; George Roumain-1999, 1998).

2018 MPSF Freshman of the Year

BYU freshman opposite Gabi Garcia Fernandez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/St. Francis School) ranks fifth in the MPSF in kills per set (3.44), has served the second-most overall aces in the conference with 46, and is the overall points leader entering the postseason with 434 (4.34 P/S). He is one of two freshmen within the MPSF’s top-15 leaders in kill average. Garcia Fernandez propelled the Cougars to a pair of early season road wins at No. 14 Ball State (Jan. 12) and No. 1 Ohio State (Jan. 13), leading to MPSF Offensive Player of the Week honors. Against the Cardinals, he collected a double-double on 13 kills (.458 hitting) and 11 digs, while also serving three aces. Then, in a win over the top-ranked and two-time defending NCAA Champion Buckeyes, he put up a team-best 19 kills (.282) to go with six blocks. He is one of two freshmen on the first or second team all-conference lists combined. Garcia Fernandez is the fifth Cougar to be named MPSF Freshman of the Year (Ben Patch-2013; Taylor Sander-2011; Yamil Perez-2007; Ryan Millar-1996).
