UH Keeps Streaks Alive; Sato Sets 49er Record

HAWAII (8-2 MPSF/18-2 Overall) kept alive an incredible win streak of 26 consecutive sets with two more 3-0 outcomes over USC (Mar. 2-3). The Warriors have swept their last eight matches, have won 17-straight at home dating to last year, and own the second-best win percentage in the country this year (.900). Larry Tuileta totaled 18 digs through the six sets against his former team (3.00 D/S). He ranks second in the conference in digs per set (2.46). Stijn Van Tilburg is tied for third in the MPSF in kill average (4.43 K/S). Hawaii enters the week as the NCAA’s top team in blocks per set (2.70 B/S), and the MPSF’s best in opponent hitting (.191). Stanford visits Honolulu this weekend for two (Mar. 10-11).

LONG BEACH STATE (13-1 MPSF/17-2 Overall) Andrew Sato picked up 10 digs in a 3-0 home win over UC San Diego (Mar. 3), becoming the all-time leader in 49er history. He has 893 career digs entering Friday’s home match vs. George Mason (Mar. 10), needing just seven to become the 15th player in MPSF history to reach 900. The 49ers also host Loyola-Chicago Saturday (Mar. 11). In addition to the sweep of the Tritons, LBSU held UC Irvine to its season-low of .106 hitting in a 3-1 win (Mar. 1), and have clinched home court for the MPSF Quarterfinals (Apr. 15). The 49ers have won 13 straight in the conference, and 10 straight overall. Sato leads the MPSF with 2.62 digs per set. Bryce Yould (.506) and Amir Lugo-Rodriguez (.497) are the top-two hitters in the conference, with the latter also on top of the NCAA in blocking (1.31 B/S).

BYU (9-1 MPSF/15-2 Overall) served 11 aces in winning its ninth-straight with a 3-1 home result over Cal Baptist (Mar. 3). Jake Langlois served five of those aces, a career-high. He added 15 kills at .360, while Brenden Sander had 14. BYU leads the MPSF in team aces per set (1.63). The Cougars travel to Pepperdine for two this week (Mar. 10-11).

STANFORD (6-5 MPSF/11-7 Overall) won two matches in University Park, PA, 3-1 over Lees-McRae (Mar. 3) and 3-0 over Penn State (Mar. 4). Clay Jones hit .556 with 12 kills in the straight-set win over the host. He also had six blocks vs. the Bobcats. The Cardinal travels to Hawaii for two conference matches this week (Mar. 10-11).

UC IRVINE (9-5 MPSF/12-6 Overall) bounced back from its loss at Long Beach State to win at CSUN in five (Mar. 3), where it hit .410 on the night. The Anteaters had three hitters swing for better than .400 with double-digit kills in the win—Aaron Koubi (20 kills, .455), Thomas Hodges (15 kills, .542), and Tamir Hershko (15 kills, .407). Michael Saeta served three aces in the win, giving him 43 on the year (MPSF No. 2). UCI travels to St. Francis (Mar. 8), along with Ohio State to play Ball State (Mar. 10) and the host No.1 Buckeyes (Mar. 11).

CSUN (5-7 MPSF/12-7 Overall) split two home matches last week, defeating UC San Diego in four sets (Mar. 1) and coming up just short in five to UC Irvine (Mar. 3). Arvis Greene had 21 kills in each match, hitting .410 against the Tritons. The Matadors have a busy week on the road. They visit UCSB Wednesday (Mar. 8) to make up an earlier postponement, before taking on Loyola-Chicago and George Mason in Long Beach (Mar. 10-11). Dimitar Kalchev has served a national-high 51 aces.

USC (5-9 MPSF/6-12 Overall) dropped a pair of 3-0 matches at Hawaii (Mar. 2-3), though only the first match was an MPSF loss. USC returns home to play Lewis Thursday (Mar. 9). Lucas Yoder is the NCAA kills per set leader (4.84) as well as points per set (5.20).

UC SANTA BARBARA (4-9 MPSF/8-10 Overall) split two matches in University Park, PA, losing in four at Penn State (Mar. 3), and winning in three vs. Lees-McRae (Mar. 4). The Gauchos have a make-up match Wednesday (Mar. 8) against CSUN in MPSF play. Lewis will also visit on Saturday (Mar. 11). Connor Drake is No. 2 in the MPSF in blocking (1.21 B/S), and Jacob Delson is tied for third in kills (4.43 K/S).

UC SAN DIEGO (2-11 MPSF/5-13 Overall) fell in four at CSUN last Wednesday (Mar. 1) and in three at Long Beach State Friday (Mar. 3). Tanner Syftestad recorded a stat line of 16 kills, three aces, five blocks, and eight digs at CSUN. The Tritons travel to Columbus, OH to face No. 1 Ohio State and Ball State (Mar. 10-11).

CAL BAPTIST (1-12 MPSF/3-14 Overall) dropped a four-set conference match at BYU (Mar. 3). Enrique Garcia tallied 15 kills and Kevin Vaz served three aces. The Lancers visits future MPSF opponent Concordia Saturday (Mar. 11).

UCLA (8-6 MPSF/11-7 Overall) hosts Lewis Wednesday (Mar. 8) and Harvard Saturday (Mar. 11). Last in action, UCLA was edged 3-2 at UC Irvine (Feb. 24), before bouncing back in four sets at UC San Diego (Feb. 25). Christian Hessenauer was a spark for the Bruins, providing 15 kills (.333) and eight digs in the win and 16 kills (.355) and two aces in the loss. Daenan Gyimah ranks second in the NCAA stats this week with a .491 hitting clip.

PEPPERDINE (4-6 MPSF/6-7 Overall) comes off a bye week, as it hosts BYU for two (Mar. 10-11). The Waves dropped a pair of straight-set matches at Hawaii last time out (Feb. 24-26). Mitchell Penning hit .481 in the series (15-2-27), including an 11-kill, .714 first night effort.
