MICAH MA’A OF UCLA MPSF/MOLTEN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UCLA junior setter Micah Ma’a (Kaneohe, HI/Punahou School) guided the Bruins to a .396 hitting percentage with 46 assists, six digs and two block assists in helping snap No. 3 Hawai’i’s 26-match home winning streak (Jan. 28). His final assist was on a save on the Hawaii side of the net, while crashing into the scoring table. The ball was saved and set simultaneously to Christian Hessenauer, who put it away to give UCLA a 31-30 lead in the decisive fourth set. In set three, the Bruins had no hitting errors on 27 swings (.593), while Ma’a recorded 14 assists. He totaled 83 assists in the series (10.38 A/S) and served six aces which moved him into third-place on the all-time school list (101). UCLA hit .303 through the two-match split. DAENAN GYIMAH OF UCLA MPSF/MOLTEN DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UCLA sophomore middle blocker Daenan Gyimah (Scarborough, Ontario, Canada/Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate) helped the Bruins to a two-match series split at No. 3 Hawaii, which snapped the Warriors’ 26-match home win streak (Jan. 28). Gyimah recorded a career-best nine block assists in the opening match of the series, and added nine kills with a .438 clip (Jan. 26). In the win, he added three kills, two digs, an ace, a block solo, and three block assists. Gyimah hit .391 (12-3-23) for the week. UCLA Snaps Hawaii's 26-Match Home Win Streak

UCLA (0-0 MPSF/8-1 Overall) snapped No. 3 Hawaii’s 26-match home winning streak in the second of a two-match series on Sunday (Jan. 28), also handing the Warriors their first loss of 2018. The No. 2 Bruins worked extra time in a 32-30 set four to come away with a series split, capped off in the final two points by a kill and an ace from Christian Hessenauer, who finished with 20 kills (5.00 K/S) on .457 hitting. UCLA hit .400 or better in each of the final three sets (.396 for the match), guided by Micah Ma’a’s 46 assists. Ma’a also served six aces in the series. Daenan Gyimah had nine kills and a career-high nine block assists in the first match (Jan. 26), and totaled 13 blocks in the series (1.63 B/S) with a .391 clip (12-3-23). UCLA hosts Princeton Thursday (Feb. 1) at 7 pm on Pac-12 Networks, before visiting UC Irvine Saturday (Feb. 3). UCI was handed its only loss this year by UCLA in five sets (Jan. 10).

PEPPERDINE (0-0 MPSF/3-2 Overall) won a pair of matches last weekend in Fairfax, VA, sweeping the host George Mason (Jan. 26) and winning in four sets vs. No. 14 Ball State (Jan. 27). David Wieczorek made his season debut, totaling 29 kills (4.14 K/S) with a .471 clip, while serving two aces in the first win. Weston Barnes totaled 21 digs in the seven sets (3.00 D/S). Pepperdine’s .415 hitting clip against Ball State is the third-highest in a match this year in the MPSF. The Waves host Princeton Saturday (Feb. 3).

GRAND CANYON (0-0 MPSF/8-2 Overall) won a pair of home matches last weekend, 3-1 over UC San Diego (Jan. 26) and 3-0 over Ottawa (Jan. 27). Cullen Mosher hit .531 for the week (20-3-32) and served six aces, including tying the MPSF season-high of five vs. Ottawa. He hit .667 vs. UCSD (12-2-15) with nine digs. Will Schwob hit .400 for the week (19-5-35), and had a double-double vs. UCSD with 13 kills and 12 digs. The Antelopes travel to Lindenwood (Feb. 2) and McKendree (Feb. 3) this weekend.

BYU (0-0 MPSF/5-3 Overall) dropped 3-1 and 3-2 decisions at No. 6 UC Irvine this past weekend (Jan. 26-27). Brenden Sander had 16 kills in the second match, after a 13-kill first match. MPSF hitting leader Price Jarman was 10 for an errorless 16 (.625) in the first match. He is hitting .484 on the season. BYU hosts UC Santa Barbara for two this weekend (Feb. 2-3), televised on BYUtv.

CONCORDIA (0-0 MPSF/2-2 Overall) dropped a four-set match at home vs. No. 6 UC Irvine last Wednesday (Jan. 24) and stays home to play Hope International Monday (Jan. 29). The Eagles also visit top-ranked Long Beach State Friday (Feb. 2). Raymond Barsemian had 17 kills and served three aces, while Chandler Gibb recorded another double-double on 28 assists and 10 digs against UCI.

USC (0-0 MPSF/3-5 Overall) fell in three sets at top-ranked Long Beach State last Saturday (Jan. 27). Gianluca Grasso had a team-high 11 kills. USC stays on the road this week, visiting Lewis (Feb. 2) and Loyola-Chicago (Feb. 3).

STANFORD (0-0 MPSF/1-7 Overall) fell 3-0 at No. 1 Long Beach State last Friday (Jan. 26). Jaylen Jasper had a match-high 12 kills. Stanford stays on the road this week, visiting UC Irvine (Feb. 2) and UC San Diego (Feb. 3).
