BYU (2-0 MPSF, 2-0 Overall) is in the MPSF win column twice, with three and four-set home wins over Hawaii to begin 2013. The No. 2 Cougars were led by Taylor Sander all weekend, as the two-time All-American delivered 14 kills at .542 on night one and 18 kills at .500 on night two. Russ Lavaja totaled 17 weekend blocks. BYU hosts Lewis for two this weekend (Jan. 11-12).
UC IRVINE (0-0 MPSF, 3-0 Overall) swept 3-0 Friday matches over Cal Baptist and Long Beach State, before holding off UCLA in five sets Saturday, to capture a second straight UCSB Tournament Title. The No. 1 Anteaters received a perfect offensive effort from MVP Coling Mehring against the Lancers, hitting an 11-for-11. Jeremy Dejno was 13 for an errorless 27 (.481) in the title match.
UCLA (0-0 MPSF, 2-1 Overall) won two of three at UCSB for another second-place finish in the tournament. The Bruins erased a two-set deficit to the host Gauchos, before holding off UC San Diego. Robart Page had career-highs of 22 kills (.514), 11 digs, and five blocks vs. UCSB. UCLA heads to Hawaii this week for non-conference matches vs. Ohio State, Penn State, and UH.
LONG BEACH STATE (0-0 MPSF, 2-1 Overall) picked up wins over Loyola-Chicago (3-0) and UC San Diego (3-2) en route to a second straight third-place finish at the UCSB Invitational. Taylor Crabb had a 19-kill match vs. the Tritons, and 15 vs. the Ramblers in Alan Knipe's return as head coach of the 49er program. Setter Connor Olbright was an all-tournament honoree.
UC SAN DIEGO (1-1 MPSF, 1-2 Overall) made its first-ever semifinal appearance in the UCSB Invitational, storming back to upset No. 5 Lewis in five sets, after a 2-0 deficit. Each of the Tritons' matches went the distance on their way to fourth-place, narrowly missing a championship match appearance. Vaun Lennon was named to the all-tournament team.
UC SANTA BARBARA (0-0 MPSF, 2-1 Overall) hosted the 49th annual UCSB Asics Invitational this past weekend, winning two of three matches. The Gauchos swept No. 5 Lewis and Loyola-Chicago, as Dylan Davis was named to the all-tournament team, hitting .667 (7-1-9) along with three aces and six blocks vs. the Flyers.
CAL BAPTIST (0-0 MPSF, 2-1 Overall) Guilherme Koepp posted 20 kills with a .452 clip and five aces to lead the Lancers on the final day in Santa Barbara, a 3-1 win over Lewis. Levi Cabral added an 18-kill match, following a 24-kill/ .600 effort against Loyola-Chicago on the first day, also a four-set win. CBU is off this week.
STANFORD (0-0 MPSF, 2-0 Overall) posted two season-opening victories at home over Grand Canyon and George Mason, each in four sets. Eric Mochalski recorded nine blocks and three aces, while Brian Cook hit .500 (19-3-32) vs. GMU. The Cardinal hosts their MPSF opener Saturday against Pacific.
PACIFIC (0-0 MPSF, 1-0 Overall) swept George Mason at home to begin 2013, holding the Patriots to .090 hitting. Taylor Hughes recorded for 16 kills with a .387 attack. Adam Troy added 10 kills (.333) and Tommy Carmody had a match-high nine blocks. The Tigers open their conference schedule at Stanford Saturday (Jan. 12).
HAWAII (0-2 MPSF, 0-2 Overall) JP Marks tallied 14 kills and three aces in the Warriors' second match at No. 2 BYU this past Saturday. Hawaii plays host to the annual Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Invitational this week, as Ohio State (Jan. 10), Penn State (Jan. 11), and UCLA (Jan. 12) visit in three non-conference matches.
CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) took down top-ranked Canadian team Alberta at USC last Thursday in three sets. Greg Faulkner hit .600 (11-2-15) and served two aces. Brandon LeBrock had a match-high 12 kills (.318). The Matadors now turn towards the MPSF and regular season, visiting UCLA Tuesday (Jan. 8).
USC (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) Tanner Jansen recorded 18 kills, seven digs, and four blocks in a home exhibition match with No. 1 Canadian team Alberta last Friday. Christian Rivera added 12 kills and Robert Feathers 11 with six blocks. The Trojan season begins Thursday (Jan. 10) at UC San Diego and Friday (Jan. 11) at No. 1 UC Irvine.
PEPPERDINE (0-0 MPSF, 0-0 Overall) swept a home exhibition contest last Saturday over top-ranked Canadian team, University of Alberta. Maurice Torres posted a match-high 19 kills while hitting .400. The Waves controlled the overall hitting (.341-.182) and blocking (8-3). Pepperdine opens its regular season with MPSF matches at No. 1 UC Irvine and UCSD.
LEVI CABRAL MPSF MOLTEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cal Baptist senior outside hitter Levi Cabral (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led the Lancers to a 2-1 week in beginning the season at the UC Santa Barbara Asics Invitational, posting a team high 4.82 kills per set and 1.45 digs per set. Cabral added five aces and four blocks. He posted his best match of the week in a bounce-back contest against No. 10 Loyola-Chicago with 24 kills, while hitting .600, along with six digs. The Lancers are in their first year competing in the MPSF.
