2009 MPSF Player of the Year ERNESTO CARRANZA • #10 • Junior • Midfield • SACRAMENTO STATE • Oakdale, CA
Ernesto Carranza led the Hornets during conference play with four goals and two assists, and recorded two game-winning goals. He struck for the game-winner in the 67th-minute of a 2-1 Sac State triumph over Denver on October 18, and one game later collecting the match's lone goal in the 1-0 victory at Seattle. For his career, Carranza has 11 goals and 11 assists, with his assist total ranking third in school history. Entering the postseason, he is second in the conference in points (17), fourth in assists (5), and fifth in goals (6). Carranza becomes the first Hornet to earn MPSF Player of the Year honors.
2009 MPSF Newcomer of the Year ALEX TARNOCZI • #9 • Freshman • Forward • DENVER • Castle Rock, CO
Freshman forward Alex Tarnoczi led the Pioneers in both goals (6) and points (15), which ranks tied for fifth and sixth in the MPSF, respectively. He was named MPSF Co-Player of the Week on Sept. 15 after scoring the game-winning goal in overtime to give the Pioneers a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over defending Atlantic-10 champion Dayton, and had a pair of goals and an assist in a DU win over Belmont. Those performances also earned Tarnoczi spots on the Soccer America Men's Team of the Week and Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week.
2009 MPSF Coach of the Year MICHAEL LINENBERGER • 21ST YEAR • SACRAMENTO STATE
Michael Linenberger led the Hornets to their second Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season title, and first since 2001. Sacramento State posted a 10-5-2 record in the regular season, and collected an unbeaten 6-0-1 record in MPSF play. The 10 wins tied the school record set during 1992, while records fell for most consecutive wins (five), longest unbeaten streak (currently seven) and longest home winning streak (currently seven) over the course of the season. For Linenberger, the honor marks the third of his career. He was named MPSF Coach of the Year in 2001 and shared the honor in 2005.
