DENVER (5-5-0 overall, 3-0-0 MPSF) senior Kyle Christensen came up with his second straight game-winning goal Saturday, a 59th-minute tally at Air Force, as the Pioneers shut out their third straight MPSF opponent by a count of 1-0. Sophomore goalkeeper Joe Willis earned his third straight shutout. First-place Denver stays on the road this week, at San Jose State Friday (Oct. 17) and Sacramento State Sunday (Oct. 19). NEW MEXICO (6-4-2 overall, 3-1-0 MPSF) came up with two close MPSF home victories, 1-0 in overtime over San Jose State and 2-1 over Sacramento State. Junior defender Simon Ejdemyr turned in a big Sunday with one goal and one assist. In Friday's sudden-victory, junior Justin Davis knocked in the 92nd-minute game-winner, assisted by senior Jack Smithson. Tied for first with nine points in the conference standings, the Lobos take a three-game win streak to UNLV on Friday (Oct. 17) for its lone game this week. UNLV (7-4-1 overall, 2-2-0 MPSF) senior Lamar Neagle put away a pair of game-winning goals in MPSF action in Las Vegas over the weekend, leading a 4-1 win over Sacramento State and 2-1 win over San Jose State. He struck with 1:02 to play in regulation against the Spartans, after senior Ben Haugland had tied the game in the 74th-minute. Sophomore Stephen Sifuentes scored the Rebels' last two goals against the Hornets. UNLV has already equaled its overall win total from last year, and remains home for New Mexico Friday (Oct. 17). AIR FORCE (3-8-0 overall, 1-2-0 MPSF) was blanked at home by Denver Saturday, 1-0. Junior goalkeeper Jim Gullo tied his career-high with eight saves. The Falcons visit Sacramento State Friday (Oct. 17) and San Jose State Sunday (Oct. 19). SACRAMENTO STATE (6-4-2 overall, 1-2-0 MPSF) dropped both of its MPSF road games this past weekend, 4-1 at UNLV and 2-1 at New Mexico. Junior goalkeeper Ryan Kenny had six saves in Las Vegas, while freshman Brian Oliver also collected six between the posts in Albuquerque. The Hornets host Air Force Friday (Oct. 17) followed by first-place Denver Sunday (Oct. 19). SAN JOSE STATE (4-4-3 overall, 0-3-0 MPSF) came up short at New Mexico, 1-0 in overtime, and at UNLV, 2-1. Sophomore Efrain Burgos Jr. scored in the 30th-minute in Las Vegas. Senior goalkeeper Lewis Sweeney totaled 10 saves on the weekend, including seven against the Lobos. The Spartans host first-place Denver Friday (Oct. 17) and Air Force Sunday (Oct. 19) NEAGLE AND EJDEMYR MPSF BRINE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - UNLV senior forward Lamar Neagle (Federal Way, WA/Jefferson HS) scored two game-winning goals this past weekend, lifting the Rebels into third-place with wins over Sacramento State, 4-1, and San Jose State, 2-1. He struck in the 25th-minute against the Hornets, and at the 88:58 mark to finish off a comeback win over the Spartans. Neagle was also a September 22 recipient of this conference award. Woodland, Calif. - New Mexico junior defender Simon Ejdemyr (Boras, Sweden) was largely responsible for a 1-0 shutout over San Jose State Friday, constantly breaking up Spartan attacks on the backline. In Sunday's win over Sac, he dished out his first career assist in the fifth-minute, followed by a penalty-kick goal two minutes later. The Lobos did not allow a goal over the weekend while Ejdemyr was on the field. NOTE: Lamar Neagle (UNLV) and Simon Ejdemyr (New Mexico) will meet one another this Friday (Oct. 17) in a crucial MPSF contest in Las Vegas. This is the only game this week for each team. The Lobos are tied for first with nine points, while the Rebels are in third with six points. |
