Complete Release in PDF Format SAN JOSE STATE (4-1-3 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) tied non-conference rival and highly-ranked preseason Santa Clara, 1-1, last Wednesday on the Broncos' field. The Spartans then picked up a 2-0 road shutout at CS Bakersfield on Sunday to extend their unbeaten streak to four games. Sophomore Efrain Burgos Jr. contributed two of the three SJSU goals during the week. The Spartans visit Sacramento State Sunday (Oct. 5) to open MPSF play. SJSU won both meetings last year. SACRAMENTO STATE (5-2-2 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) came up short 1-0 to No. 21 UC Davis at home Thursday but managed to tie Cal Poly 1-1 Sunday. Sophomore Fernando Cabadas scored on a penalty kick against the Mustangs to give the Hornets a draw against the third-ranked team from the Far West Region poll. Sac State opens MPSF play at home Sunday (Oct. 5) against San Jose State. DENVER (2-5-0 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) traveled to No. 5 Creighton Saturday and fell 2-0. The Pioneers begin the conference slate at home with New Mexico Friday (Oct. 3) and UNLV Sunday (Oct. 5). Both meetings last year vs. UNM resulted in a tie, while DU won twice over the Rebels. Junior Collin Audley and senior Colin Jones each own five points this year. AIR FORCE (2-6-0 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) dropped a 4-1 decision at No. 21 UC Davis this past Saturday in the final non-conference game of the season. The Falcons were actually the first team all season to take an early 1-0 lead on the upstart Aggies, after Sept. 22 MPSF Player of the Week Steve Noller tallied his third goal of '08 in the 22nd-minute. Air Force begins conference action Friday (Oct. 3) when UNLV visits, followed by another home game with New Mexico Sunday (Oct. 5). NEW MEXICO (3-3-2 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) was off last week, and starts MPSF competition on the road. The Lobos visit Denver Friday (Oct. 3) and Air Force Sunday (Oct. 5). UNM captured an MPSF Title and fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance with the 0-0 double-overtime draw at Denver in `07. Meanwhile, the Lobos have outscored the Falcons 9-0 in their last three meetings. Junior Stephen Brown and freshman Michael Green are the Lobo point leaders with six each. UNM is receiving votes in this week's College Soccer News Top-30 poll. UNLV (5-2-1 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF) visits Air Force for the start of MPSF Friday (Oct. 3), followed by a trip to Denver Sunday (Oct. 5). The Rebels split a pair of 1-0 outcomes with the Falcons last year and fell twice to the Pioneers. Senior Lamar Neagle was last week's conference player of the week, has scored in four straight games, and currently leads the MPSF with 10 points. UNLV is coming off a bye week. BURGOS NAMED MPSF BRINE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Woodland, Calif. - San Jose State sophomore midfield Efrain Burgos, Jr. (San Bruno, CA/Westmoor HS) scored two of the three Spartan goals this past week, along with one assist, to guide his team to a win and a tie. He converted in the 64th-minute in a 1-1 draw against non-conference rival Santa Clara, and followed up with an 81st-minute strike in a 2-0 shutout over CS Bakersfield, while earning a first half assist. San Jose State is unbeaten in its last four contests. |
