Zone Cuts Highlight BYU in Colorado

BYU Nathan Gonzales won the one-meter and three-meter diving boards with NCAA Zone cuts, at Colorado Mesa’s Intermountain Shootout (Oct. 6-7). The Cougar men defeated CMU, 261.5-125.5 (Sat.) and 114-68 (Fri.), while the women defeated Air Force 216-177 (Sat.) and CMU 281-112 (Sat.) and 128-60 (Fri.). Matt Denkers also had zone cuts on each board, while Morgan Cooper added a one-meter cut. Elizabeth Homes had a zone cut and victory on the women’s one-meter. Preston Jenkins totaled four men’s wins over the two days in the 200 free, 200 IM, 200 back, and 100 back. Kelly Hatanaka was second in the women’s 400 IM (432.8), 200 IM (2.07.29) and 200 back (2.06.02).

UCSB men competed against USC, while the women faced Washington State to kick-off the season (Sept. 29). The men won five events, highlighted by Mason Tittle’s wins in the 50 free (20.57) and 100 free (44.96)…Heaven Quintana won all three of her individual races, taking the 100 breast (1.04.02), 100 fly (54.53), and 100 IM (57.10).

CAL POLY Amelia Feick was a double-event winner in the 200 breast (2.19.51) and 100 breast (1.05.04) in the season opener vs. Washington State (Sept. 28). Bonnie Diamond won the 500 free (5.02.49) and was third in the 200 free (1.52.83)…Brian Whittington posted two wins against USC (Sept. 30) in Cal Poly’s Men’s opener, going 56.07 in the 100 breast and 2.03.79 in the 200 breast.

SAN DIEGO Dani Taylor had a second-place finish in the 50 free in 24.40, and followed up with another second-place result in the 100 free, going 52.46 vs. USC (Sept. 29). Makenna Briggs produced two top-three swims, placing third in the 200 free (1:53.77) and 50 free (24.64). Alex Hubel added a pair of fourth-place results in the 200 fly (2.02.66) and 100 fly (56.73).
