BONNIE DIAMOND OF CAL POLY MPSF/TYR FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Cal Poly senior Bonnie Diamond (Tucson, AZ) won the 500 free with a season-best 4:58.05 at UCSB (Jan. 27). She then won the 200 free in 1:52.10, beating the second-place finisher by a full two seconds. Diamond also placed second in the 1000 free with a season-best 10:11.88, and swam on the winning 400 free relay team (3:30.17). This is the first career MPSF weekly honor for Diamond. JOE KMAK OF UCSB MPSF/TYR MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

UC Santa Barbara junior Joe Kmak (San Mateo, CA) earned three wins towards the Gauchos’ regular season finale team win over Cal Poly (Jan. 27). He won the 100 breast (56.77) and 200 breast (2:03.69), and recorded the fastest breaststroke split (25.63) for the first-place 200 medley relay (1:30.33). UCSB SWEEPS REGULAR SEASON FINALE

UCSB men (170-92) and women (171-91) defeated rival Cal Poly to conclude the regular season (Jan. 27). For the Gaucho women, Brittney Straw swept the breaststroke races (1:05.00 in the 100; 2:17.86 in the 200), while Heaven Quintana swept the butterfly events (55.20 in the 100; 2:00.25 in the 200). Quintana added a victory in the 200 IM (2:06.59)… Top Gaucho male highlights included Mason Tittle sweeping the short-distance freestyles (50--20.51; 100--45.06), Joe Kmak winning both breaststrokes (56.77 in the 100; 2:03.69 in the 200), and Billy Mullis taking first in the 100 back (49.59) and 200 back (1:46.72).

CAL POLY Bonnie Diamond won the 500 free with a season-best (4:58.05), and won the 200 free (1:52.10) by a full two seconds at UCSB (Jan. 27). She also placed second in the 1000 free with a season-best (10:11.88), and swam on the winning 400 free relay (3:30.70). For the Mustang men, Nolan Newland won the 500 free (4:34.63) and Zach Cootes won the 200 IM (1:51.90).

BYU competed at Utah in the regular season swim finale (Jan. 27), as Haley Bertoldo earned BYU’s only individual first-place swim in the 100 back (57.48). Tiare Coker, Casey Cunningham, Vanessa Moffatt and Katie Smith won the 400 free relay (3:33.74). Mariah Lindsay placed top-three in each of her events (second in 200 breast-2:21.45; second in 200 IM--2:09.52; and third in 100 breast--1:05.82)…For the men, Preston Jenkins was second in the 200 free (1.40.54) and Kent Fellows third in the 100 free (46.99). Matt Denkers had a second-place one-meter dive (320.03), as did Elizabeth Holmes on the women’s one-meter (264.08).

SAN DIEGO Mackenna Briggs won the 200 free (1:54.26) and 500 free (5:07.53), while Alex Hubel finished first in the 100 fly (57.54) and 200 fly (2:06.66) in a home loss to UC San Diego (145.5-137.5). Briggs, Kailyn Evans, Sydney Wong and Hubel finished first in the 400 free relay (3:31.23). Other Torero winners were Dani Taylor (100 free, 52.95) and Anna Luckenbach (1000 free, 10.25.68).
